Abstract This review article describes some of the problems connected to the construction of codes for the numerical solution of ordinary differential equations. Our aim is to show, on a concrete example, the complexity of the process which, starting from the continuous problem, arrives at its approximate solution handling a large number of intermediate numerical problems.
